Why does Mario always get the Princess?

What if Luigi has been pining away for the Princess this whole time? And what if Mario is a total douche? These are some questions I often found myself asking when I was playing Super Mario Bros as a kid. Ok so I wasn't thinking that, but it is something to think about. Why did that short fat brother get all the credit, when the tall far better looking brother did just as much to save the princess. Maybe she is just a sucker for a Player(1) and maybe Luigi is destined to be alone. Anyway the video below is pretty classic.
